Smithsonian Museum Day: 2 FREE tickets to many museums!

The Smithsonian has once again joined with many museums around the country to offer 2 FREE admissions to select museums on Saturday, September 29, 2012.  To receive your free tickets you can fill out this form and choose your museum.  Fine print says one ticket is valid for two people and you may receive one ticket per valid email address.  If you are a family of four, it seems if both you and your husband enter valid emails you could receive 4 free admissions.  Once you’ve completed the form you will be emailed your ticket passes.  You must print these and take them with you to your chosen museum in order to receive free admission.

Last year we took the opportunity to visit our local Transportation Museum!  If there’s a museum you’ve been wanting to visit but didn’t want to spend the money, this is your chance to do it free or cheap!  All in all, a great family outing!

Considering: Rest and Grandparents

I realize it’s been quite awhile since I posted but I have had a wonderful and restoring rest.  How, one might ask, with two little ones are you able to rest?  Well, my husband’s step-mom (and dad) blessed me with rest as I took the kids to MI!  Although my dad is nearby, I have dear friends, and Husband and I have had a few over night getaways, this was a solid week of rest and very little felt responsibility.  Simply wonderful!   It was definitely a trek to and fro.

The drive there was actually quite smooth and we only took about 30 mins more than it normally takes with Husband along with us.  The drive home was a bit of a nightmare taking almost 14hours to drive only 10.5hrs.  Even with the disaster of a ride home, I’m thankful we made the trip.  Not only was it restful for me, it was an obvious joy for both the kids and the grandparents.  Growing up my grandparents were always a plane ride away and I remember the sweet visits we had with my “Nomie”.  I loved her dearly and the visits with her were precious as they were far between each other.  Unfortunately Matt’s family is far too and I wanted the kids to start building those precious memories.   I’m so grateful for Matt’s family who loves me and our kids so well.

Now that we’re home it’s taken me awhile to get back in the swing of the daily routine but I promise more deal posts will be up soon.  Do know that things may be changing a bit around here soon, I hope you’ll like what’s in store.  Don’t forget to check out the Fantastic Finds page!  I’ll be linking up our adoption blog soon too for anyone interested.

NPR Station Finder- for road trips!

Okay, so by posting this you are learning of the nerd in me.  From time to time I really enjoy listening to NPR, especially on road trips.  As summer approaches and road trips are on the horizon, I thought I’d share my latest find.  Have you ever been traveling in remote or simply new places and you can’t find a music station you want to listen to?  Hitting the scan button and hoping it lands on something tolerable is really not the best option.

So, for all those out there who might also enjoy a little NPR, there is a nifty NPR station finder that will aid in your listening pleasure.  If you go here to the NPR station finder page you can enter your zip code and find your local station.  Now, the best part is the “NPR Road Trip” tab under the Station Finder.  Simply enter your starting zip code and then your destination zip code and it will give you all the NPR local stations along the way!  From what I can tell it does only pick one route, so if you are traveling on a different route you may want to print this downloadable pdf with all NPR stations nationwide.

In general, a fantastic way to have a little listening variety on your road trip!  What are your traveling tunes?

Sunday Exhortation: The Duties of Parents

Lately I have been pondering the great privilege and responsibility of being a mother.  As a mother to two young children I am aware that they are constantly watching, observing, and absorbing.  At the tender age of 1, Lil Dude seems to be learning new things all the time, even with limited communication and mobility he is expressing himself and learning daily.  Since Munchkins has an amazing grasp of language she is observing, absorbing, and repeating new things regularly as well.  There are regularly times that she’ll say something that is in one way surprising and in another way entirely expected that she would have learned a new concept, word, or phrase.

Today’s Sunday Exhortation is in part a thanks to my dear friend Katie who reminded me of the wonderful little book called The Duties of Parents by J.C. Ryle.  I honestly read this in its entirety when Munchkins was an infant.  Now that she’s older I intend to reread with new eyes and perspective.  This small book, you can download for free here, is a wonderful exhortation to parents in bringing up children.  After a short introduction he gives 17 focuses in training a child.  The duties of parents truly are many and while 17 may seem like a lot, he breaks them down simply and is straight to the point.   Love that about this little book.   To name only a few of his 17 focuses: Train your child in knowledge of the Bible, A Habit of Obedience, Redeeming the Time, The Promises of Scripture, The Continual Prayer for Blessing.

If you’re a parent, how have you been encouraged lately?  Or do you remember ways your own parents trained you when you were young that have left a lasting impression?

Valentine’s Day with Seeds Family Worship (New album and more!)

Seeds Family Worship views “Valentine’s Day as a day for celebrating God’s love and call to purity”.  As part of that they are releasing a new album today called Purity.   I’m exited to see that this is the first album in their “Youth” collection.  The Purity album is 8 songs of scripture about purity.  It was also created in conjunction with FamilyLife’s Passport to Purity program.  You can go here to listen and/or download the album, $9.99.

Seeds and FamilyLife have also teamed together to exhort parents to take the Parents Purity Pledge.  Take a look at the pledge.  It calls parents to examine how purity in our children first begins with purity in our homes.  Every person who takes the pledge receives a FREE song from Purity and a FREE devotional download from the Passport2Purity curriculum by FamilyLife.  I would encourage you not to simply sign the pledge for the freebies.  Take some time and prayer to consider what the Lord might have for your own heart.

Considering: The New Year

Happy New Year!  In many ways I can’t believe it’s 2012.  Tomorrow Lil Dude turns 1 year old!  My year has definitely been marked by his growing/aging.  Since Thanksgiving it has seemed a whirlwind in our household but am thankful for some rest and time with family over the holidays too.  While it is a new year, Lil Dude is not a baby anymore, and there are changes afoot, I am thankful that I rest knowing the promise of Hebrews 13:8.   My Lord is the same, yesterday, today, and forever!  What a peace and certainty it gives knowing that while people, circumstances, and places may change, He remains.  Not only does He remain, his unfailing, never ending love is there too!  As the days, and year, goes by I rest in Him.  Wishing you and yours, a happy new year!

Considering: More Simple Blessings

Hello again!  Nope, haven’t dropped off completely but have been in the midst of celebration and family.  Husband’s family came in from MI for several days to celebrate Christmas with us so there was much fun, laughter, and joy.  After they left I’ve been trying to get the house back in order and into some sort of routine with the kiddos.  It’s always fun to have family, including grandparents and cousins, it just tends to throw things a bit too.  I am overwhelmed by the generosity and giftings from our family and am already enjoying several of my gifts very much.

This time of year also brings our wedding anniversary!  Husband and I will celebrate 5 years of marriage this Friday.  5 years may not be many compared to those of you who have celebrated 25 and many more years of marriage, but to us it’s definitely special.  In many ways it seems like we’re still newlyweds but in other ways it could be our 30th anniversary.  The Lord has blessed me with a man who loves and serves him above all, then me, and our kids.  Exactly the way it should be.  I am so grateful for this blessing in my life.  Husband has been faithful in the good times and the bad.  The first year of marriage was rough as I grieved the unexpected loss of my mother and yet I look back and see Husband was faithfully walking with me even when I tried to push away.

Husband has planned a surprise anniversary outing and we have been blessed by those who love us and will be taking care of Munchkins and Lil Dude while we are away.  So thankful to be loved and served by others in this way.  Being a mom is a huge priority and daily focus in my life but being a wife to my husband should take first place, always.  This is often difficult with little ones but others willingness to care of our kids, it makes easier to have some quality husband and wife time.

With Christmas and our anniversary within a week of each other I find I am amazed by the blessings of family and friends.  Even with all these blessings, ultimately I rest in my salvation through Him, His faithfulness, and His steadfast love.

Sunday Exhortations: Advent Calendar and readings

I had been searching for about a year off and on for an advent calendar.  When I was growing up my mom always bought the cardboard ones with the little doors that would open to show a new character to the nativity.  I like those but it gets difficult to find a new one each year that I liked and I didn’t want to reuse old calendars.  That left me with ones that we could use each year.  There are a myriad of choices and options out there, as I found on Pinterest.  I found several I liked and others I wished I was crafty enough to create.  Then I decided to head over to Etsy one more time in hopes I had missed something the other times I had looked.  I had!  I found The Christmas Nativity Advent Calendar magnetic pattern by Jenn Matthews at “Some Bright Ideas”.

Below you’ll see what I was able to create using her pattern.  Her pattern was complete enough that I could follow it and when I had questions or needed any clarification Jenn was amazing and graciously answered quickly via email.

One of the features I loved about this design was that the pieces adhere magnetically to the background so the kids can choose where the pieces go and it can be different each year.  Well, my type A adult self didn’t anticipate my first born, 3 year old, as noted by the first day when she lined up all the stars in the sky.  The stars have been rearranged a bit but now we have a sheep levitating in the sky with the angels, etc.   As the month has gone on she’s moved pieces, and, honestly, I’ve moved or directed a few.    We’re hoping to remember to take a picture each year at the end to see what the kids have created.  It’s been so fun to watch Munchkins as she is eager to put a new character on the calendar.

To accompany the calendar we’ve also been reading Russ Ramsey’s Behold the Lamb of God.  This is an amazing advent narrative that both Husband and I have been enjoying immensely!  I am not sure that Munchkins is quite ready for it but we continue to include her as we read, you never know what truths they are picking up on as they listen.  Ramsey makes several disclaimers in the preface about what the book is and is not.  Primarily it is “not a substitute for the Bible but rather “a servant of the Bible.”  He does this in a way that I’ve never read and I sincerely appreciate his time, thought, and writing that has helped the story of advent come more alive for me this year.  If you’d like to read a chapter you can do so here at The Rabbit Room.

Do you have an advent tradition with your family?  I’d love to hear about it!  May this advent season bring you wonder and awe of the gift of Christ on our behalf!

Considering: Simple blessings

The last week I have been under the weather.  It all started last Weds. with a slightly scratchy throat but by Monday I felt just awful.  Whenever I get sick I am reminded of simple blessings in my life.  The most obvious one is relatively good health.  I don’t get sick often but when I get stuffy or a sore throat I am reminded how blessed I am that typically I am blessed with good health.  My dad has been struggling with some health problems for a few years and being mildly sick with a cold reminds me I need to remember to pray for him and others I know that struggle with chronic illnesses.

The second blessing is my faithful husband.  In our hall hangs husband’s wedding vows done in calligraphy that he had made for our first anniversary.  Part of his vows were the traditional “in sickness and in health”.  In both sickness and in health he is loving and cherishing me.  What a sweet and wonderful gift.  He took time off work, has been taking care of the kids, and quietly taking care of things at home.  James 1:17 tells us that every good and perfect gift is from our Father above.  How true!  He’s given me a husband who takes care of me in sickness and in health.

There are countless other simple blessings that are daily reminders of His grace in my life.  Praying that I would be able to “be still and know Him” (Ps. 46:10) so that I might recognize the simple blessings he has graciously bestowed on me.

Considering: Change

At the tender age of 10 months Lil Dude is showing resistance to change.  The time changed on Sunday for daylight savings time.  I use to look forward to fall time change as it meant an extra hour of sleep.  You see, those who know me well they know I believe sleep is one of God’s greatest gifts he has given.  This year as the “fall back” approached I was not so eager.  You see, Lil Dude has refused to change.  The clock may say it’s only 4:30am but he’s determined it must indeed be time to eat and play.

Thankfully, I am blessed with a dear husband who has graciously taken in stride the cranky baby, and frankly, and wife.  He has served in his concerned whisper of what should we do with Lil Dude, doing the early am feeding, cleaning up after dinner, and giving me “me time”.  SO grateful for a Husband who rolls with the change and the lack there of.  If you have any suggestions to help Lil Dude along with his resistance, please share!
