Sunday Exhortation: The Duties of Parents

Lately I have been pondering the great privilege and responsibility of being a mother.  As a mother to two young children I am aware that they are constantly watching, observing, and absorbing.  At the tender age of 1, Lil Dude seems to be learning new things all the time, even with limited communication and mobility he is expressing himself and learning daily.  Since Munchkins has an amazing grasp of language she is observing, absorbing, and repeating new things regularly as well.  There are regularly times that she’ll say something that is in one way surprising and in another way entirely expected that she would have learned a new concept, word, or phrase.

Today’s Sunday Exhortation is in part a thanks to my dear friend Katie who reminded me of the wonderful little book called The Duties of Parents by J.C. Ryle.  I honestly read this in its entirety when Munchkins was an infant.  Now that she’s older I intend to reread with new eyes and perspective.  This small book, you can download for free here, is a wonderful exhortation to parents in bringing up children.  After a short introduction he gives 17 focuses in training a child.  The duties of parents truly are many and while 17 may seem like a lot, he breaks them down simply and is straight to the point.   Love that about this little book.   To name only a few of his 17 focuses: Train your child in knowledge of the Bible, A Habit of Obedience, Redeeming the Time, The Promises of Scripture, The Continual Prayer for Blessing.

If you’re a parent, how have you been encouraged lately?  Or do you remember ways your own parents trained you when you were young that have left a lasting impression?

Free 1 year Newsweek Subscription

Hurry these go fast!  RewardsGold is offering a free 1 year subscription to Newsweek.  Simply complete the requested information to earn your “points” and at the end you will be asked to pick your reward, one of which is free subscription to Newsweek.  You will be asked to complete a breakfast foods survey about your breakfast eating habits and asked to provide 25 to 50 word reviews of breakfast foods.  If you are wondering if this offer is legit, I have done several of the Rewards Gold offers and received my free magazines.  Says it takes 6-8 weeks for first issue to arrive but mine was much faster.  Note, if you already have a subscription you can simply call customer service for the magazine and add this new subscription onto your current one.  Yay for free magazines!

Ecomom clearance + coupon!

Ecomom.com is a great online store full of “Eco-friendly products for Mom, kids, and baby”.   Right now they have an amazing warehouse sale going on!  There are a ton of Melissa and Doug products on sale including puzzles, lacing cards, pattern blocks, folding dollhouse (which we have and love!), and more!  There are other deals too, I was just keyed in on the M&D products.  In addition, when you log into your account, you can use coupon code JODY to save $20 off your $50 or more purchase!   Coupon is valid through the end of March and is a way of saying thanks to customers from their CEO.  Shipping is free with $50 purchase, which appears to be before the coupon is applied.

I was introduced to them awhile back and have been continually impressed with the products, prices, and customer service offered.  Yes, I realize there was an overwhelming response and some delays in response to their Black Friday offer last year.  That said, they have shown a business ethic that is rare today trying to make orders right, help customers, and even offer new offers.  You can visit their blog and view this video message from their CEO, Jody Sherman.  Really quite unusual to see.

Happy shopping!

Leapfrog Letter Factory DVD only $7.01!

Amazon currently has the Leapfrog Letter Factory DVD for only $7.01 $6.99!  (Price dropped again!)  That’s 53% off the list price.  I had been waiting for the price to drop and according to various price trackers it’s the lowest price in the last year.  Shipping is free with Amazon Prime membership.   Munchkins and I’ve watched this several times from the library and it seems to be a fun teaching/learning tool for phonics.

Sunday Exhortations: Sanctifying the Ordinary

Husband and I have recently been having the discussion of what exactly does it mean to sanctify the everyday, seemingly mundane, ordinary things of life.  While this question may seem to some as over thinking or over spiritualizing life, in truth it is our call as believers.  1 Corinthians 10:31 says “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”  Likewise, Colossians 3:17 exhorts “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”  So say we know that.  Now what?

In talking with Husband I’ve been reminded of the excellent message series by Sovereign Grace Ministries titled “Sanctifying the Ordinary”.  (You can download the entire message series in mp3 format for free.)  The messages are given as a reminder that “behind all that appears ordinary is an extraordinary God.” I had written a previous Sunday Exhortation on the Biblical Understanding of Work which includes the message on work.  The 4 part message series covers the topics of sleeping, working, eating, and relaxing.  I’d encourage you to listen to these messages and really think about what does it mean that we do indeed have a most extraordinary God who is behind the everyday ordinary things of life.  Another reason to shout Hallelujah!
